Fall is officially around the corner, so you know what that means… Pumpkins!!! Pumpkin scented candles, pumpkin flavored coffee drinks, and pumpkin pies overloaded with whipped cream!
Oh, I guess the changing of the season means some other stuff, too. It also means that our group of volunteers from UW-Madison will once again be visiting the Allied Drive Learning Center to promote literacy skills to young learners!
The proposed dates, which have been approved by the learning center are:
- September 22
- October 20
- November 17
- December 8
Keep in mind, these may be subject to change, but the student coordinator will keep the group posted.
Our first trip to Allied was this past Monday, October 1. We had a great volunteer turnout, and were so excited to have some new first-year volunteers participating! Our theme was Fall, and the students enjoyed reading and looking at books all about fall. Kindergarten and first grade students participated in storytimes, while the second and third graders paired up with volunteers to read one-on-one. Overall, a great way to start this year of Allied Drive Literacy Time! We’re all looking forward to coming back in a few weeks. Here are some of the books we read:
Old Bear by Kevin Henkes
Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert
The Stranger by Chris Van Allsburg
